Justicia californica
This Sonoran native plant is a major food source for hummingbirds in winter. Thin, pale green stems twist around to form a loose round-shaped shrub. The flowers on Chuparosa are tubular and thin and scarlet red. There are also yellow and gold blooming versions. Flowers provide nectar to hummingbirds when many other plants are not blooming. Easy to grow, tolerant of sun, reflected heat, and drought. Prefers well-drained soils, and also tolerates salty soils. (ships as 1 gallon, rooted plants)
